Sunflower!

Sunflowers! Nothing says summer quite like sunflowers. They give a burst of color to any garden and are perfect for anyone who is new to gardening. Sunflowers are super easy to grow and are fairly drought tolerant once established, so if you kill plants by underwatering, these are for you They are also great if you live somewhere that experiences extremely hot days.

The type that I planted are from Ferry~Morse and they are the American Giant Hybrid sunflowers. An amazing thing about them is that they can grow up to 16ft, with an average of 10-14ft and an average head size of 1ft! They are massive! Another great thing is that they only take 65-75 days to bloom.

I don’t exactly know how I am going to have these in my garden, because as of right now 2 are in one gallon pots and 2 are in half gallon pots. Investing in some larger pots like the ones my tomato and basil are in are probably what I’m going to end up doing.

The only problem is that today I went to Lowes and Home depot and they were out of every single pot size imaginable. It’s looking like I’m going to have to go online to get my pots.

The good thing is that while at Lowes, I picked up 2 other types of sunflowers! Both are by Ferry~Morse and they are the Dwarf Teddy Bear and the Velvet Queen. The dwarf teddy bear grows to 3ft and the velvet queen grows to 5ft. They both take around 75-90 days to bloom and can be planted March through July, so I will hopefully be sowing at least one of each soon, but I did just plant some Alyssum and Rosemary and they might take up most of my time.

I hope that you enjoyed this little garden update and I hope you stick around to see them bloom!
